Microfibre Extensions

At one point or another, many of us would like to have long hair for a variety of reasons. It could be that you want to add body, increase hair length or enjoy an complete change of colour without using hair dye. Whatever that reason may be, such a step is taken with great anticipation and often with a feeling of trepidation. There are many horror stories flying around about failed extensions. However, as with most things, if we make it a point to increase our knowledge before we take that step and find out what is involved and what we are letting ourselves in for, then the decision about whether or not to go for MicroFibre extensions becomes much clearer.

There are many uncertainties and even fears if you have not been down this route before. So, read on and I will put your mind at rest and make it easy for you to enjoy the undoubted benefits of MicroFibre extensions.

  • The most frequently asked question is “Will it damage my own hair?”. The answer is “No” as long as your hair is strong, has not been recently bleached or had strong peroxide colouring used on it. It is also important that your hair is not very thinning, fragile or, if Afro hair, been recently relaxed.

  • The second most popular question asked is “Can I wash it?”. Yes, of course you can but, you must remember that it is an extension added to your own hair and so there is a specific way of washing it to avoid any problems.

  • I recommend that you do not wash the extensions to your hair at all during the first 10 - 14 days as the extra weight of water in the hair is likely to make the extensions slide loose. If you really must have water on your hair during this first week then dampen a face flannel and use it to clean your scalp and then spray a good leave-in conditioner. This time delay will allow your own hair and the extensions to bind together which means there will be much less chance of the extensions sliding loose.

  • Don’t swim in sea water or a pool with your extensions as this can cause the hair to tangle. If you really must swim, then be sure to completely enclose the hair and keep it dry.

  • The best way to brush the hair is to hold the roots and, making sure not to hook the brush into the hair, brush from the tips and work your way to the root section.

  • Before you go to bed make sure the extensions are put up high on the top of the head and plait the rest down. This takes only a very few minutes and is probably the most important procedure of all.

  • If you do not follow the above step closely then you will have tangled hair in the morning! This applies to all long hair, even if it is all your own natural hair.

  • In the morning remove the plaiting and style as desired. Use rollers to aid your styling if you wish. Remember to apply a little serum before styling.

  • When the time comes to shampoo your hair, brush the extensions out to remove any small tangles before shampooing. Mix an equal amount of a good quality shampoo and water and place this mixture in a spray bottle or cup. For ease of washing stand under the shower or sit in the bath. First soak the hair with water as usual, then apply the shampoo and water mixture running your fingers on your scalp between the extensions and work your way to the tips. Don’t use a circular motion as this will encourage tangling. Rinse thoroughly and repeat twice more.

  • You should apply a good quality conditioner which has been mixed in an equal amount with water. Use the same method as for shampooing (but once should be enough!) rinsing thoroughly. Wrap a towel around your head to absorb the excess water. Gently dry hair and use a hot brush to style it.

  • Do not rub your hair as this will encourage tangling!

  • Avoid using round brushing as the action pulls on the extensions and could damage your natural hair.

  • Use a little serum to keep your extensions from tangling. This has the added benefit of keeping your hair glossy.

  • Follow these directions and you will enjoy your beautiful extensions.
